Performers include Jack Bradshaw, Tom Brier, Marty Eggers, Frederick Hodges, Sophie Rivard, David Thomas Roberts, Virginia Tichenor and Craig Ventresco with Meredith Axelrod. Emceed by Jack Rummel.
§ Festival Sampler
Friday, 6:30-7:30 P.M., Yosemite
Each festival brings new performers, along with a few who haven't appeared here for a while. At the Festival Sampler you can listen to one tune by each of them, in the style that they're known for. Then you can decide how to use your scarce time at the festival. Jack Rummel emcees.
Hit Songs From World War I
Friday, 8:00-8:45 P.M., Yosemite
Frederick Hodges & Ann Gibson - Ragtime and Tin Pan Alley composers responded to World War I by creating a remarkably large body of popular songs devoted to wartime themes. Thousands of songs were written about the war, some of which are still familiar nearly a century later. Ann Gibson and Frederick Hodges will present a rollicking show highlighting the best ragtime songs of World War I, demonstrating that even the most topical of songs can still be enjoyable and thrilling a century later.
Sing-A-Long with Jim
Friday, 8:30-9:00 P.M., Comstock
Jim Radloff - Popular songs from the Ragtime, Classic Jazz and Hollywood musical eras. Jim provides historic tidbits about the tunes for your further enlightenment, and always allows for requests.
§ Cakewalk
Friday, 9 P.M., Martinique Ballroom
We tried it last year, and it worked. So we're doing it again. Everyone gets to do the cakewalk. The dance floor will be open for all. And there's even a lesson to teach you how. High-kicking, bending, bowing. That's how they did it at the Turn of the Century, and you can do it now, to the music of the Porcupines. The cakewalk class will be Friday at 4:45 P.M., taught by our head dance instructor, Bruce Mitchell. The cakewalk itself will be at 9 P.M. When the dance is over, everyone gets a slice of cake.
Saturday, Nov 17
Rummel plays Rummel
Saturday, 9:45-10:30 A.M., Yosemite
Jack Rummel - Jack plays his own compositions, from his earliest works to the premiere of a new one, with some that have proven popular along the way.
§ Youth Master Class
Saturday, 10:00-11:00 A.M., Camellia
Just a couple weeks ago, the West Coast Ragtime Society hosted its 3rd Annual Youth Ragtime Piano Competition. Today, the division winners will participate in a Master Class, taught by Frederick Hodges. You can hear the young musicians play the tunes which won the competition. Then listen in, as they get tips on how to play even better. Emceed by Chris Bradshaw, the coordinator of the competition.
Latin American Piano Traditions
Saturday, 10:30-11:15 A.M., Yosemite
Frank French & Sarah Roth Vanegas - Sarah Roth Vanegas joins Frank French in a session featuring syncopated piano music of Colombia, which Sarah found in the National Library in Bogotá. Many of these works have not been performed for over 40 years. This style of music syncopates in a triplet three-four alternating with 6/8 time, which like ragtime, shows the African influence on the music of the New World.
Tangos, Waltzes and a Milonga
Saturday, 12:30-1:00 P.M., Martinique
Stanley Stern and Nancy Piver - Dance music you might have heard at any cafe in Buenos Aires, Rio De Janeiro, Paris, or New York during the Ragtime Era. Tangos, Waltzes, Milongas, and Brazilian-influenced dances of Ernesto Nazareth, that were danced by Irene and Vernon Castle, Florence and Maurice Mouvet, and other famous dancers. The audience is actively encouraged to get up and dance to this wonderful and exciting music.
The Forgotten Verse
Saturday, 12:45-1:30 P.M., Yosemite
Squeek Steele - Verses to well known popular songs, 1890s to 1940s. Irving Berlin thought it was critical to perform the verse, as it was a perfect lead-in to the chorus (refrain). Very often, the verses are more interesting than the main part of the song.
§ The Music of Zez Confrey
Saturday, 2:45-3:45 P.M., Yosemite
Zez Confrey was one of the foremost novelty ragtime composers. Although remembered best for his 1921 hit, Kitten on the Keys, Confrey's music ranges from complex novelty rags to miniature operas, popular songs, and mood pieces. His music was influenced not only by ragtime, but also by French Impressionistic music and the rhythmic complexities of piano rolls. Performers include Mimi Blais, Tom Brier, Frederick Hodges, Brian Holland, Sophie Rivard, Virginia Tichenor and Stephanie Trick. Emceed by David Jasen.
Silent Movie: The Clinging Vine
Saturday, 4:00-5:30 P.M., Martinique
Frederick Hodges - A delightful comedy feature: The Clinging Vine (1926). Produced by Cecil B. DeMille. Starring Leatrice Joy and Tom Moore.
Uncle Charlie's Rags
Saturday, 5:15-6:00 P.M., Sierra
Nan Bostick - Nan Bostick's great uncle Charles N. Daniels was an important promoter of ragtime, but contrary to scholarly opinion, he did more than "compose only a couple of rags himself". As proof, Nan will play as many "Uncle Charlie" rags as she can fit into one set. She might even toss in an Uncle Charlie "coon" song, and will definitely perform the complete unpublished rags that Daniels scrapped for spare parts, to use in ragtime songs.
§ Stride, Stomps, & Surprises
Saturday, 6:30-7:45 P.M., Yosemite
Ragtime evolved in many directions. Here are a few of them. Enjoy a show that features stride ragtime, stomps, and some unexpected combinations. Performers include Paul Asaro, Neville Dickie, Brian Holland, Carl Sonny Leyland, Ray Skjelbred, and Adam Yarian. Backed by a solid rhythm section featuring Marty Eggers on bass, Hal Smith on drums, and Craig Ventresco on guitar, this show promises to be a lot of fun. Emceed by Jack Rummel.

They will be accompanied by Alex Hassan, Frederick Hodges, Brad Kay, and Dennis Pash. Emceed by Frederick Hodges.
§ Grand March

Once again, hundreds of marchers, led this year by the Pacific Coast Ragtime Orchestra, will march through the hotel. The group starts forming up as soon as the shows end. So put on your best duds. Or come as you are. And join the big parade.

Check the schedule for their individual sets. Then hear them all during this concert. Performers are Andrew Barrett, Jared DiBartolomeo, Adam Swanson and Stephanie Trick. Emceed by Frederick Hodges.
