“Ragtime That is Different”: A John Stark Sampler Friday, Nov. 20 - 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm, Martinique Ballroom Ragtime’s publishers played an important role in the history of ragtime by disseminating and promoting ragtime. One of ragtime’s earliest and most important publishers was John Stark (1841-1927). He is most famous for publishing Scott Joplin’s “Maple Leaf Rag” in Sedalia, MO in 1899 and gave a royalty agreement to Scott Joplin on the publication of that rag, which was far ahead of his time. Stark coined the term “classic ragtime” to set his published rags apart from others. Although the term “classic ragtime” was used in a promotional sense, it proved to be an apt description of much of Stark’s ragtime catalog, which included works by greats such as Scott Joplin, James Scott, Joseph Lamb, Arthur Marshall, Artie Matthews, and many others. Besides these top composers, Stark’s catalog also contains many examples of obscure rags by little-known composers which are equally worthy of being considered classic. This special set will sample some of the great “classic ragtime”, and other ragtime rarities published by Stark. Trebor Tichenor will provide some introductory historical comments about John Stark. Festival Sampler Friday, Nov. 20 – 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm, Martinique Ballroom With so many new performers, and a few who haven’t appeared here for a few years, how do you decide who to hear? This is your chance to hear new performers and returning performers play in their own unique styles. In addition, this year’s “Festival Sampler” will offer a preview of some coming events over the festival weekend. Featured performers include: Elliott Adams, Taslimah Bey, Tom Brier, Neville Dickie, Richard Dowling, Marty Eggers, John Gill, Frederick Hodges, Vincent Johnson, Max Keenlyside, Carl Sonny Leyland, Terry Parrish, Will Perkins, John Schafer, Sean Sharp, Hal Smith, Ray Skjelbred, Squeek Steele, and Sam Williams. Silent Movies Friday, Nov. 20 – 10:00 pm – 11:00 pm, Martinique Ballroom Frederick Hodges accompanies two movies from the 1920s. This year’s movies are: His Wooden Wedding (MGM 1925) Staring Charley Chase. When he is informed by a jealous rival that his betrothed has a wooden leg, Charley becomes a runaway groom and finds comic adventure on the high seas. Liberty (MGM 1929) Staring Laurel and Hardy. Two escaped convicts (Laurel & Hardy) change clothes in the getaway car, but wind up wearing each other's pants. The rest of the film involves their trying to exchange pants, in alleys, in cabs and finally high above the street on the girders of a construction site.
Ragtime, 1909! Saturday, Nov. 21 – 3:15 PM – 4:45 pm, Martinique Ballroom Let’s hark back 100 years to 1909, when ragtime was the rage in America. Every tune in this show is from 1909. A centennial celebration! Featured performers include: Andrew Barrett, Nan Bostick, Tom Brier, Crown Syncopators, Marty Eggers, Frederick Hodges, Max Keenlyside, Morten Larsen, Carl Sonny Leyland, Larisa Migachyov, Terry Parrish, Porcupine Ragtime Ensemble, Ragnolia Ragtette, Ragtime Skedaddlers, Sean Sharp, Hal Smith, Adam Swanson, Trebor Tichenor, Tichenor Family Trio, Stephanie Trick, and Craig Ventresco & Meredith Axelrod. Stride Summit Saturday, Nov. 21 – 6:30 PM – 8:00 pm, Martinique Ballroom This year’s festival features some of the best stride players in ragtime. A whole show devoted to stride piano! Stride is a virtuosi piano style that developed out of ragtime on the East Coast. This new twist on ragtime was created and developed by pianists James P. Johnson, Willie “The Lion” Smith, and Fats Waller, building on the stylings of earlier ragtime pianists such as Luckey Roberts and Eubie Blake. Featured performers include: Neville Dickie, John Gill, Morten Larsen, and Stephanie Trick. Marty Eggers, bass, and Hal Smith, drums, will provide some rhythm support. Emceed by Jack Rummel.
Ziegfield Follies Revue Frederick Hodges, Ann Gibson, Sean Sharp & Helen Burns, Saturday, 10:00 pm – 11:00 pm, Martinique Ballroom Ann Gibson and Frederick Hodges present an all-star revue featuring the most delightful, musical, and frequently naughty songs originally introduced in the Ziegfield Follies. This fully costumed show will feature hit ragtime -era songs featured in the Ziegfeld Follies from 1909 to 1927 and made famous by such Ziegfeld stars as Fanny Brice, Eddie Cantor, Nora Bayes, Harry Richman, and John Steele. The Songs will include such memorable hits as: "Hello, Frisco," "The Ziegfeld Follies Rag," "Lovie Joe," "A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody," and "It All Belongs To Me."Staring Helen Burns, Ann Gibson, Frederick Hodges, Sean Sharp, and the most beautiful chorus girls in the world!
Youth Concert Sunday, Nov. 22 – 10:00 am – 11:30 am, Martinique Ballroom The West Coast Ragtime Society plays an active role encouraging ragtime interest in the next generation. Here all of this year’s featured youth performers in this one show. Performers scheduled to appear include: Vincent Johnson, Max Keenlyside, Will Perkins, Tim Rotolo, Sergey Smirnov, Adam Swanson, and Luke Vandermyde. Emceed by Frederick Hodges.
Festival Finale Sunday, Nov. 22 – 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm, Martinique Ballroom Come hear highlights of the festival all in one show for the last special concert of the festival. In a variety show format, the show features many festival performers including: Andrew Barrett, Taslimah Bey, Tom Bopp, Nan Bostick, Tom Brier, Crown Syncopators, Neville Dickie, Richard Dowling, Marty Eggers, John Gill, Frederick Hodges, Max Keenlyside, Morten Larsen, Carl Sonny Leyland, Terry Parrish, Will Perkins, Porcupine Ragtime Ensemble, Ragnolia Ragtette, Raspberry Jam Band, Hal Smith, Squeek Steele, Adam Swanson, Trebor Tichenor, Stephanie Trick, Craig Ventresco & Meredith Axelrod. Post-Festival Party Sunday, Nov. 22 – 5:30 pm, Coffee Garden Restaurant The post-festival party provides one last chance to hear some more great ragtime! The hotel provides a buffet dinner and the bar is available. Note that there is limited seating capacity, and Red Lion recommends that you buy your tickets ahead for this event to be assured a seat. Tickets will be on sale at Red Lion during the festival weekend.
