FRIDAY, Nov 22

Hooray for Hollywood Ragtime!
Frederick Hodges, Friday, 12:00-12:45 P.M., Sierra
Pianist Frederick Hodges will present an illustrated musical concert highlighting the great rags and ragtime songs that were featured in the great Hollywood Musicals of the first half of the twentieth century. Many great ragtime songs were given new life and propelled to the Hit Parade when presented by such stars as Alice Faye, Fred Astaire, and Betty Grable, Doris Day, and Debbie Reynolds

Whatever Happened to the Verse?
Squeek Steele & Gary Greenlund, Friday, 12:45 – 1:30 P.M., Yosemite
Squeek and Gary highlight tunes with forgotten verses. Come hear some favorites & surprises!

Joplin’s Acquaintances
John Reed-Torres, Friday, 1:30 – 2:15 P.M., Sierra
This special set features works by Joplin’s acquaintances, including pieces by James Scott and Arthur Marshall.

Joplin Rags
Scott Kirby, Friday, 2:15-3:00 P.M., Martinique
An entire set of great classic ragtime by Scott Joplin.

§ Ragtime Rediscovered
Friday, 3:00 – 4:30 P.M., Martinique
Max Morath will present a special show called “Ragtime Rediscovered” which explores Ragtime’s New History since mid-20th century, when the challenge and charm of the music inspired its re-discovery by a new generation of players and composers. Max will give us the history of the recent ragtime revival from his perspective, starting in the 1940s through today. This set will feature Clint Baker, Jeff Barnhart, Tom Brier, Marty Eggers, Frederick Hodges, Brian Holland, Max Keenlyside, Scott Kirby, David Thomas Roberts, Squeek Steele, Adam Swanson, Virginia Tichenor, John Reed-Torres. Emceed by Max Morath. 

What’s New, Doc?
Raspberry Jam Band, Friday, 4:30 – 5:30 P.M., Martinique
This set features rags from the 1960s on. 

From Favorites to Rarities
Rosemary Hallum, Friday, 5:30 – 6:00 P.M., Comstock 3
Rosie’s favorites and rarities all in one set!

The Tango Hour
Stern & Lindholm, Friday, 6:30 – 7:30 P.M., J.B.’s Lounge
Stern & Lindholm play classic tangos, new age Tangos, American (Hollywood) Tangos, French Tangos, Tango Waltzes, Milongas, and Tangos written in the last few years.

§ Festival Sampler
Friday, 6:30 – 8:00 P.M., Martinique
With so many performers, and a few who haven’t appeared here for a few years, how do you decide who to hear? This is your chance to hear new and returning performers play in their own unique styles. Featured performers include: Elliott Adams, Clint Baker, Jeff Barnhart, Big Mama Sue, Steve & Robyn Drivon, Eddie Erickson, Gary Greenlund, Alex Hassan, Frederick Hodges, Brian Holland, Ivory & Gold, Max Keenlyside, Scott Kirby, Carl Sonny Leyland, Jonathan Meredith, Ezequiel Palleja, Morgan Siever, Marc Silverstein, Squeek Steele, Daniel Souvigny, Adam Swanson, Emceed by Frederick Hodges. Note: Jack Rummel was scheduled to emcee this event, but cannot the festival this hear. Click here for information.

Cakewalk Demonstration
Friday, 8:00 – 9:00 P.M., Martinique
Here’s your chance to strut your stuff. Everyone gets to do the cakewalk, the high-kicking, bending, bowing dance style of the Turn of the Century, to the music of the Porcupine Ragtime Ensemble. 
If you’d like to really know the steps, go the Cakewalk dance class on Friday at 6:00 P.M. in J.B.’s Lounge, taught by Bruce Mitchell.
Even if you can’t make the class, get to the Martinique Ballroom at 8:00 P.M., where the dance floor will be open for all. And when the cakewalk is over, there’s a slice of cake for everyone. 

Just a Walk with Ragtime and Tango
Ezequiel Palleja, Friday, 9:00 – 9:45 P.M, Sierra
This set features rags, early tangos and rags in tango style. 

§ Silent Movies
Friday, 10:00 – 11:00 P.M., Martinique
There are two silent movie sets at this year’s festival, one on Friday evening and the other on Saturday morning. On Friday evening, Frederick Hodges accompanies a silent movie using an authentic compiled score! David Shepard, an internationally renowned film preservationist, is providing both the silent movies and historical commentary about the films. Shepard’s company, Film Preservation Associates, is responsible for many high quality DVD versions of silent films. Shepard began restoring films when he joined the American Film Institute in 1968 as one of their first staff members. In 1987, he bought the Blackhawk Films library. Mr. Shepard is a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

TOL’ABLE DAVID (1921)
One of the most thrilling and moving classics of silent cinema! Richard Barthelmess stars as the sweet and good-natured son of a family living in a small West Virginia town who is forced to grow up and face responsibilities when a family of outlaws move into town and begin terrorizing the community. 


Saturday, Nov 23

§ Silent Movies
Saturday, 9:00 – 10:00 A.M., Martinique
On Saturday morning, Squeek Steele accompanies two silent movies! David Shepard will again provide historical commentary about the films. 

The silent movies are:
THE PLAY HOUSE (1921) Buster Keaton
One of the titles in THE PLAY HOUSE says "this fellow Keaton seems to be the whole show." Buster plays at least 20 parts; taking trick photography, film editing and make-up to their 1921 limits. THE PLAY HOUSE is a very funny essay on illusion set in the melieu of vaudeville. 

BARNEY OLDFIELD'S RACE FOR A LIFE (1913) A Keystone comedy
Barney Oldfield was the most famous race driver of a century ago; he and his car run to the rescue of Mabel Normand tied to the railroad tracks in a parody of Victorian melodrama. Mack Sennett and Ford Sterling also appear.

Duets Deluxe
Rosemary Hallum & Christoph Schmetterer, Saturday, 10:00 – 10:30 A.M., Camellia
Pianists Rosemary Hallum & Christoph Schmetterer play a set of duets, featuring the lilting Merry Widow Waltz.

§ Youth Master Class
Saturday, 10:00 – 11:00 A.M., Sierra
On Saturday, November 9, 2013, West Coast Ragtime Society hosted its 9th annual Youth Piano Competition for young pianists ages 8 – 18. The first place winners from each division will be participating in a Master Class led by festival headliner, Jeff Barnhart. This event is open to all festival attendees. Come hear the future of ragtime!

Early Latin-American Dance Music
Ezequiel Palleja, Saturday, 11:30 A.M. – 12:15 P.M., J.B.’s Lounge
Enjoy some authentic early Latin-American themed dance music, played by Ezequiel Palleja, who hails from Buenos Aires, Argentina!

§ A Chat with Max
Saturday, 2:15 – 3:15 P.M., Martinique
Max Morath will be interviewed live in a special set, hosted by popular Bay-Area radio personality, Alisa Clancy. Alisa is Operations Manager and “Morning Cup of Jazz” Co-Host at KCSM FM 91.1 in San Mateo, CA. She has many years of professional radio experience and has already interviewed Max Morath once before on one of her radio programs! Festival attendees are encouraged to submit written questions for Max before the interview. Alisa will collect them before she interviews Max and incorporate them into this special set. 

Pan-American Set
Scott Kirby, Saturday, 3:15 – 4:00 P.M., Martinique
A sampling of Latin-American-influenced ragtime and related styles that shows the connections between ragtime, early jazz, creole music, and other traditions from the Americas, including new compositions. 

Ragtime Since 1950
Squeek Steele, Saturday, 4:00 – 4:45 P.M., Sierra
Enjoy a set of rags from the ragtime revival of the 1950s to the present.

Keenlyside Originals
Max Keenlyside, Saturday, 4:45 – 5:30 P.M., Sierra
Max Keenlyside plays an entire set of his own compositions!

Dances of the Castles
Stern & Lindholm, Saturday, 5:30 – 6:30 P.M., J.B.’s Lounge
An hour of dances written for Vernon and Irene Castle.
Irene and Vernon Castle were responsible for civilizing the rough, brute dances of the early 20th Century and making them socially acceptable, and promoting their dance patterns, stylings, steps, manners, costumes, etc. They also employed composers to write music for their dances, and which they used when instructing students. The dances include: One-steps, Two-steps, Fox Trots, Waltzes, (Regular and Hesitation) Tangos, the Maxixe. This set also features music from Irving Berlin's first BroadwayShow, called: "Watch Your Step." The two stars of this musical were Irene and Vernon Castle, who played Dance Instructors.

§ Ragtime 1913!
Saturday, 6:30 – 8:00 P.M., Martinique
Every tune in this show is from 1913, when ragtime was the rage in America. Featured performers:, Elliott Adams, Clint Baker, Jeff Barnhart, Mimi Blais, Chris & Jack Bradshaw, Tom Brier, Marty Eggers, Ann Gibson, Frederick Hodges, Brian Holland, Ivory & Gold, Carl Sonny Leyland, Porcupine Ragtime Ensemble, Raspberry Jam Band, Sean Sharp, Sullivans/Drivons, and Virginia Tichenor. Emceed by Max Morath. 

§ Grand March
Saturday, 8:00 P.M., Martinique
Hundreds of marchers parade through the hotel in the tradition of the ragtime era, led by the West Coast Marching Band. This year’s marching band, lead by Clint Baker, is comprised of musicians here at the festival from Ivory & Gold, Pacific Coast Ragtime Orchestra, Porcupine Ragtime Ensemble, and Raspberry Jam Band, plus other surprise guests. So put on your finest attire and join the big parade! 

Ragtime On a Roll
Frederick Hodges, Saturday, 9:15-10:00 P.M., Camellia
Frederick Hodges will present an illustrated musical concert featuring the compositions and characteristic popular song arrangements of the best Reproducing Piano artists such as Adam Carroll, Phil Ohman, Pauline Alpert, Victor Arden, Rube Bloom, Ferde Grofé, Vee Lawnhurst, Roy Bargy, George Gershwin, and others.

Right to the Heart of Ragtime
Raspberry Jam Band, Saturday, 10:00 – 11:00 P.M., J.B.’s Lounge
This set features rags that are at least 100 years old.


Sunday, Nov 24

Gospel & Inspirational Set
Ivory and Gold with Steve Drivon, Sunday, 9:00 – 9:45 A.M., Martinique
Ivory & Gold present a Gospel and Inspirational Set on Sunday morning. Some gospel tunes predate ragtime while others were conceived after the era had come to a close. All share a cathartic outpouring of joy, hope, and sorrow conveyed in the best rags. Ivory & Gold will be joined by Steve Drivon on drums for this special set.

§ Youth Concert
Sunday, 9:45 A.M. – 11:00 A.M., Martinique
The future of ragtime depends on the ragtime playing youth of today, so our festival provides opportunities for outstanding young ragtimers to spotlight their talents. All our youth performers are in this one show. Diego Bustamante, Vincent Johnson, Max Keenlyside, Enya Kuo, Florian Kruger, Frank LiVolsi, Graham Messer, Morgan Siever, Daniel Souvigny, John Reed Torres, and Ryan Wishner. Emceed by Jeff Barnhart. 

Modern Rags from the Ragtime Revival
Tom Brier, Sunday, 10:30 – 11:15 A.M., Sierra
Tom Brier plays an entire set of “modern” rags written during the ragtime revival. 

Popular Songs of 1930s Child Stars
Adam Swanson, Sunday, 2:00 – 2:45 P.M., Yosemite
This set features songs from 1930s Hollywood child stars!

European Novelty Piano
Rosemary Hallum & Vincent Johnson, Sunday, 2:45 P.M. – 3:15 P.M., Sierra
Familiar & little-known gems of Billy Mayerl, Lothar Perl & Ernst Fischer, Patricia Rossborough & Raie DaCosta, Jean Paques & Clement Doucet.

§ Festival Finale
Sunday, 4:00 – 5:30 P.M., Martinique
Come hear highlights of the festival all in one show for the last special concert of the festival. In a variety show format, the show features many festival performers including: Jeff Barnhart, Andrew Barrett, Mimi Blais, Tom Bopp, Chris & Jack Bradshaw, Tom Brier, Helen Burns, Frederick Hodges, Alex Hassan, Brian Holland, Ivory & Gold, Vincent Johnson, Max Keenlyside, Carl Sonny Leyland, Ezequiel Palleja, Porcupine Ragtime Ensemble, Ragnolia Ragtette, Raspberry Jam Band, Daniel Souvigny, Adam Swanson, and John Reed-Torres. Post-Festival Party
Sunday, 5:30 P.M., Coffee Garden Restaurant
One last chance to hear great ragtime! The hotel provides a buffet dinner and the bar is available. Seating capacity is limited, so buy your tickets ahead for this event to be assured a seat. Tickets will be on sale at the Clarion at the front desk and in the ragtime café during the festival weekend.
