Max Morath will present a special show called “Ragtime Rediscovered” which explores Ragtime’s New History since mid-20th century, when the challenge and charm of the music inspired its re-discovery by a new generation of players and composers. Max will give us the history of the recent ragtime revival from his perspective, starting in the 1940s through today. This set will feature Clint Baker, Jeff Barnhart, Tom Brier, Marty Eggers, Frederick Hodges, Brian Holland, Max Keenlyside, Scott Kirby, David Thomas Roberts, Squeek Steele, Adam Swanson, Virginia Tichenor, John Reed-Torres. Here’s your chance to strut your stuff. Everyone gets to do the cakewalk, the high-kicking, bending, bowing dance style of the Turn of the Century, to the music of the Porcupine Ragtime Ensemble.
If you’d like to really know the steps, go the Cakewalk dance class on Friday at 6:00
P.M. in J.B.’s Lounge, taught by Bruce Mitchell.
Even if you can’t make the class, get to the Martinique Ballroom at 8:00
P.M., where the dance floor will be open for all. And when the cakewalk is over, there’s a slice of cake for everyone.
Just a Walk with Ragtime and Tango

§ Silent Movies

There are two silent movie sets at this year’s festival, one on Friday evening and the other on Saturday morning. On Friday evening, Frederick Hodges accompanies a silent movie using an authentic compiled score! David Shepard, an internationally renowned film preservationist, is providing both the silent movies and historical commentary about the films. Shepard’s company, Film Preservation Associates, is responsible for many high quality DVD versions of silent films. Shepard began restoring films when he joined the American Film Institute in 1968 as one of their first staff members. In 1987, he bought the Blackhawk Films library. Mr. Shepard is a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

One of the most thrilling and moving classics of silent cinema! Richard Barthelmess stars as the sweet and good-natured son of a family living in a small West Virginia town who is forced to grow up and face responsibilities when a family of outlaws move into town and begin terrorizing the community.

THE PLAY HOUSE (1921) Buster Keaton
One of the titles in THE PLAY HOUSE says "this fellow Keaton seems to be the whole show." Buster plays at least 20 parts; taking trick photography, film editing and make-up to their 1921 limits. THE PLAY HOUSE is a very funny essay on illusion set in the melieu of vaudeville.
BARNEY OLDFIELD'S RACE FOR A LIFE (1913) A Keystone comedy
Barney Oldfield was the most famous race driver of a century ago; he and his car run to the rescue of Mabel Normand tied to the railroad tracks in a parody of Victorian melodrama. Mack Sennett and Ford Sterling also appear.

Youth Master Class

On Saturday, November 9, 2013, West Coast Ragtime Society hosted its 9th annual Youth Piano Competition for young pianists ages 8 – 18. The first place winners from each division will be participating in a Master Class led by festival headliner, Jeff Barnhart. This event is open to all festival attendees. Come hear the future of ragtime!

Alisa Clancy. Alisa is Operations Manager and “Morning Cup of Jazz” Co-Host at KCSM FM 91.1 in San Mateo, CA. She has many years of professional radio experience and has already interviewed Max Morath once before on one of her radio programs! Festival attendees are encouraged to submit written questions for Max before the interview. Alisa will collect them before she interviews Max and incorporate them into this special set.

Dances of the Castles

An hour of dances written for Vernon and Irene Castle.
Irene and Vernon Castle were responsible for civilizing the rough, brute dances of the early 20th Century and making them socially acceptable, and promoting their dance patterns, stylings, steps, manners, costumes, etc. They also employed composers to write music for their dances, and which they used when instructing students. The dances include: One-steps, Two-steps, Fox Trots, Waltzes, (Regular and Hesitation) Tangos, the Maxixe. This set also features music from Irving Berlin's first BroadwayShow, called: "Watch Your Step." The two stars of this musical were Irene and Vernon Castle, who played Dance Instructors.

Hundreds of marchers parade through the hotel in the tradition of the ragtime era, led by the West Coast Marching Band. This year’s marching band, lead by Clint Baker, is comprised of musicians here at the festival from Ivory & Gold, Pacific Coast Ragtime Orchestra, Porcupine Ragtime Ensemble, and Raspberry Jam Band, plus other surprise guests. So put on your finest attire and join the big parade!

Ivory & Gold present a Gospel and Inspirational Set on Sunday morning. Some gospel tunes predate ragtime while others were conceived after the era had come to a close. All share a cathartic outpouring of joy, hope, and sorrow conveyed in the best rags. Ivory & Gold will be joined by Steve Drivon on drums for this special set.
