Ramona Baker - "The Famed Half - Ton Duo" Sun. 13:15 - 14:15 Junior Arthur Collins and Byron G. Harlan made for quite a duo over twenty-three years. The collectors of records from the Ragtime era will recognize their names in full, as they were very active and prolific in the first two decades of the twentieth century in recorded sound and vaudeville. But what lies beneath the grooves of their hundreds of records is a story similar to many partnerships in the entertainment business of the day, a story of betrayal, selfishness, financial troubles, and friendship. Collins and Harlan were two fascinating men who came from different backgrounds and different parts of the country during the civil war, and earned their fame in the “Gay Nineties”. This seminar will speak of their most popular records, their lives, and their personalities. |

Parrish - "J. Russel Robinson: Hoosier Ragtimer and Jazzman" Sat. 11:30 - 12:30 Junior J. Russel Robinson was one of the most talented musicians ever to be born and bred in Indiana. This seminar will examine his early life and musical developments, rise to fame as both a composer and active professional pianist, his entertainment venues as band and solo pianist, prolific composer of scores of tin pan alley pop tunes, a recorder of hundreds of piano rolls, his move to the West Coast to write scores for movies, and his eventual finale in the music world. The seminar will feature vintage photos, sheet music, piano rolls, recordings and some additional recently discovered information from the composer himself. |

- "Secondary Ragtime: The Cliché That Sold Millions" Sat. 12:30 - 13:30 Junior The technique of superimposing one repetitive rhythmic pattern upon another in order to create syncopation is known as "Secondary Ragtime." Derived from African polyrhythms, it first appeared in the same year that the first published rag appeared and continued throughout ragtime's early popularity surge and beyond, ultimately becoming a cliché, but fueling the sales of millions of sheet music copies and recordings in the process. |
